St Stephen’s is a lively and dynamic place with lots going on both within our walls and outside. We have many services throughout the year which can be seen on our calendar. If you are new to St Stephen’s have a look at our ‘New Here’ page for more information on what to expect. Details of our regular services can be found below.
9am Holy Communion. This is a warm and traditional service which includes robed clergy and Common Worship liturgy. Worship varies from traditional organ hymns to some recent contemporary music on guitar. This service lasts about 1 and a quarter hours, and coffee is provided after the service in the church hall.
10:45am Family Worship/ Holy Communion. This is a relaxed family-orientated service, more contemporary in style. It is a service of Sung Worship with a mixture of traditional and contemporary songs led by a band. Children have their own programme every week in the church hall next door. Children begin the service in the church with parents. Once a month we have a Family Communion service.
Other weekly Services:
Mondays: 9.15am Centring Prayer. This is half an hour of silent prayer in the main church. It is a more contemplative way of praying, during which we experience God’s presence within us – closer than breathing, closer than thinking.
Tuesdays: 9am Morning Prayer. This is a quiet and friendly service that varies in style from week to week but is predominantly spoken from the Northumbria Communities Morning Prayer liturgy. We have Bible readings; we may discuss the passages, and then we pray for members of the church and beyond. It lasts typically around 45mins.
Thursdays: 10am Holy Communion. This is an intimate service spoken from the Common Worship liturgy. A short sermon is preached, or a reflection on the readings can involve group discussion. We then share Communion.
First Monday of the month we have 1:1:1 prayer 7-8pm: One church, Once a month for One hour. We listen for God’s guidance and pray for the needs of the church and the world.
